It was with two short words that John Lennon signalled to his wife Cynthia that their marriage was over. She had just returned unexpectedly from a holiday in Greece in 1968 and, moving through the darkened rooms of their house in Weybridge, Surrey, was greeted by the sight of Lennon and the Japanese artist Yoko Ono in towelling robes. “Oh, hi,” was all he said.

In truth, their six-year marriage had been over in all but name for a long time.
