Nail polish was frowned upon, too, because it flaked and chipped; the odds that clients would inhale runaway polish were high. Later, when I found work, the hassle of making early-morning call times in the strangest locations (4 a.m. on a small Ontario farm, 6 a.m. at an abandoned church in the heart of downtown Toronto) made my own appearance seem inconsequential.
